Choosing the right tile grout is one of the many important decisions to make when it comes to kitchen or bath remodeling. Your choice of grout will affect the tile installation process and is often a key factor in sealing out dirt and water, compensating for small size differences between individual tiles, as well as firming up the structural integrity of the installation.
DreamMaker Bath & Kitchen of Greater Grand Rapids has been handling these types of installations since 1985, so we are well versed on how to make the right choices. Here are three helpful tips to consider:
Decide on the Look
By deciding on the look you’re trying to achieve, you’re able to streamline the many available options out there until you have something that fits your vision. For instance, if you’re planning a full kitchen remodeling project, ask yourself if you want something more uniform and full surface or a tiled appearance with the grout highlighting the tiles.
Decide on the Type of Grout
There are two main grout types available today: cementitious and synthetic grout, both of which have several variations in material, grain size and pigment, among others. Consider using synthetic grout for high-water areas like bathrooms and kitchen backsplashes, since they are mold-resistant and do not require as much cleaning time to retain their aesthetic appeal. Use cementitious grout for everything else.
Decide on the Color
In many cases, the color of the grout is usually left until the last minute, but since it is vital to the look and feel of the tiles, you may want to decide on it a lot earlier. The general rule of thumb is to choose a color that is as close as possible to the color of the tiles.
However, this doesn’t apply to white tiles, as white grout will yellow over time and appear unsightly. Instead, you can opt for an off-white color or pale gray, which can blend with the white tiles and never yellow.
